PH.D) Warren Washington died on Oct. 18, 2024, in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 88. After finishing his degrees at Oregon State, Washington became the second Black student in the country to receive a Ph.D. in meteorology. A pioneering developer of the first computer models of Earth’s atmosphere, his groundbreaking work helped measure climate with unprecedented accuracy. What he discovered concerned him greatly; in the 1980s, he was among the first scientists to sound the alarm about climate change.As a senior scientist for the National Center for Atmospheric Research for more than 50 years, he advised five White House administrations and mentored generations of researchers. His accolades include the 2019 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement; the National Medal of Science (2010); and, as part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.Washington and his wife, Mary, established OSU’s largest endowed scholarship fund for students engaged in climate studies.
