Youth Education 86 STUDENT TRANSITION CENTERS Hawaii is the temporary or long-term home for some 100,000 military personnel, spouses and children. HIDOE Student Transition Centers offer a safe and stable foundation via peer-to-peer mentoring by student ambassadors to support incoming students as they acclimate to their new school community. Transition Centers are rooted at public schools with higher populations of militarydependent students, such as Leilehua High, Mokapu Elementary and Radford High. A+ PROGRAM Out-Of-School-Time (OST) programs provide a safe venue for students between the end of the school day and the availability of their family and/or caregivers, and may extend to evenings, weekends, holidays and intersessions (including summer). Among these is the A+ Program. Available for children in kindergarten through grade six, A+ provides these students with time to complete homework, and participate in enrichment and physical activities such as arts, crafts, drama, dance, sports and games. Of the more than 175 sites providing after school care through the program, some 100 are operated by the State of Hawaii. The others are handled by organizations such as the YMCA and Kamaaina Kids. For more details on A+ and other programs including REACH and UPLINK, click on the Hawaii Public Schools website’s “Beyond The Classroom” tab and check out “After School Programs”.
