Hawaii Military Guide Summer/Fall 2025

Adult Education 134 Especially if you are making the military your career, the key to advancement is through continuing your education. Fortunately, your military benefits provide financial incentives to do so. Since its inception in June 1944, the Post9/11 GI Bill (va.gov/education/about-gibill-benefits/post-9-11) has paid more than $143 billion to over 2.7 million beneficiaries. Through the Department of Defense Transfer of Education Benefits program, it has enabled Veterans, service members and their eligible dependents to train and attend school while greatly reducing out-of-pocket costs. Signed into law in August 2017 by President Donald J. Trump, the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act–also known as the Forever GI Bill– makes it even more beneficial and flexible for eligible individuals to pursue higher education and training opportunities. The biggest difference in the two GI Bill versions is that the Forever GI Bill never expires. However, the Post 9/11 GI Bill had a “use or lose” time limit of 15 years from a Veteran’s last day of Active Duty military service. EXPANSION OF GI BILL BENEFITS The news becomes even better thanks to a 2024 Supreme Court decision to expand GI Bill benefits impacting Veterans who served multiple periods of military service. Under the previous policy: • Beneficiaries eligible for both the Montgomery GI Bill (va.gov/education/about-gi-billbenefits/montgomery-active-duty) and the Post-9-/11 GI Bill (va.gov/education/aboutgi-bill-benefits/post-9-11/) were required to waive MGIB eligibility to begin using PGIB benefits.
