Living in Sunriver, Sunriver Style Photo by Cindy Martin • When walking on the paved pathways, be sure your dog is on a leash. Be on the lookout for wildlife, especially deer in the summertime. • Want to throw the ball and have your dog retrieve it? Take your dog to the Sunriver Dog Park on Cottonwood Road, across from the grocery store. There are two areas for dogs to play. • Protect your dog’s paws in both the summer and winter by investing in a good pair of dog booties. • Take the seven second test on hot days to determine if the pavement is too hot before walking your dog. Rest your hand on the pavement and count to seven. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog. • A quick tip: If the outside temperature is 77 degrees, the pavement can be 125 degrees; 86 degrees, the pavement is 135 degrees; 87 degrees, 143 degrees for the pavement and 102 degrees, 167 degrees for the pavement. Note: Walking on pavement that is 125 degrees can cause skin damage in one minute. • Even on warm summer days, the lake and river water can be chilly. Know your dog’s physical limitations before he wanders into the water. A good investment is a dog life jacket. Walking Tips with Your Dog 2025-26 | SUNRIVER MAGAZINE 120
