Every once in a while, when you are out and about and least expect it, a large jackrabbit will pop up, notice you and then run with abandon. The black-tailed jackrabbit—one of North America’s largest hares—thrives on the Peninsula. They can run at speeds of more than 35 mph and disappear from view in a heartbeat—good skills if you’re being chased by a red-tailed hawk. The hares tend to stay year-round in an area as long as there is food.
