Each year, hundreds of youth in San Mateo County enter foster care or are placed on probation. Most face unimaginable trauma and instability, forced to navigate complex emotions like sadness, anger and fear. This is where a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteer steps in, providing one-on-one guidance, support and advocacy for a young person’s healing and ability to thrive. CASA volunteers are vital to ensuring youth voices are heard, their well-being prioritized and their mental and physical health needs met. Stella became 15-year-old Aaron’s CASA volunteer after he was incarcerated. Aaron has been at juvenile hall for over a year, and Stella visits him every week, often one of his only consistent visitors. Together they navigate strong emotions, plan for his future and study for his driving permit. They also share a tradition of reading a new book each month and discussing it during visits. When Aaron has court hearings, Stella is the person he always looks for. Your support helps ensure every young person, like Aaron, has a CASA volunteer who provides the care, trust and consistency every child deserves.
